Where's Wally

Where’s Wally? began as a series of books created by the British illustrator Martin Handford. The books contain detailed illustrations depicting hundreds of people doing a variety of amusing things in different places, for example a Campsite, a Beach or a Railway Station. Somewhere hidden amongst all those people is a character named Wally. Wally’s distinctive red and white striped jumper, bobble hat and glasses make him slightly easier to recognise, but many illustrations contain red herrings to distract you from his whereabouts!
Launched in 1987, the first books only contained Wally, but since then, other friends and characters have been introduced. These include Woof the dog, a friend called Wilma and an arch enemy called Odlaw who is always dressed similarly to Wally but with a yellow and black striped jumper instead. Wally’s popularity has gone global and he is now exported to many countries around the world, often being given a local name – such as Where’s Waldo in the USA and Canada and Where’s Charlie in France. Wally travels with many belongings which he has a tendency to lose and these can often be found in the illustrated scenes too. Most famous is Wally’s walking stick which is coveted by Odlaw who is always trying to steal it.
