In 1899, eight men formed the Reading Glove and Mitten Manufacturing Company in Reading, Pennsylvania, USA, and began producing and selling knitted and silk gloves. They soon expanded into silk lingerie and in 1917, through a contest, the name Vanity Fair was selected as a brand name for the line of lingerie.
